OpenAI has moved the manufacturing of its first consumer - facing AI device, codenamed “Gumdrop”, from Luxshare to Foxconn, as per a report on January 3, 2026. The shift is driven by concerns over relying on mainland China - based production. The device, co - designed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, is expected to be assembled in Vietnam or the United States. Described as an “ambiently aware” AI companion, it may take the form of a smart pen or a small wearable audio device, with features like converting handwritten notes to ChatGPT text. A commercial launch is not anticipated before 2026 or 2027.
