OpenAI has outsourced the manufacturing of consumer-grade AI devices to Foxconn, aiming to diversify its supply chain layout

According to Taiwanese media reports, OpenAI is transferring the manufacturing of its first consumer-grade AI device from Luxshare Precision to Foxconn, in order to accelerate the development of this new product plan designed by former Apple designer Jony Ive. This change stems from concerns about manufacturing in Chinese Mainland and marks a strategic shift for OpenAI to diversify its supply chain away from China. The device, internally code-named "Gumdrop," is currently in the design phase and is not expected to be commercially available until 2026 or 2027. The product form may be a smart pen or a small wearable audio device (similar in size to an iPod Shuffle), equipped with microphones and cameras to perceive the surrounding environment, and supporting functions such as directly converting handwritten notes into ChatGPT text. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, previously mentioned that they will create an "environment-aware" AI companion device that goes beyond traditional smartphones, and the product design will be simple and interesting.
